It has a wide community of around 475 million users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana, Geneva;\">Tumblr had been previously acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in 2013. Moving ahead, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo in 2016 for $4.86 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana, Geneva;\">At the time of closure of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/06\/13\/verizon-completes-yahoo-acquisition-marissa-mayer-resigns.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo\u2019s acquisition in 2017<\/a><\/strong>, Tumblr and other properties were combined into a new business unit called Oath Inc. In November last year, the Oath was rebranded to Verizon Media Group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana, Geneva;\">And now, Verizon Media Group is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/news\/verizon-media-announces-sale-tumblr-automattic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>selling<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>the Tumblr to Automattic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana, Geneva;\"><em>\u201cTumblr is one of the Web\u2019s most iconic brands,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said Automattic CEO\u00a0<strong>Matt Mullenweg<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana, Geneva;\"><em>\u201cIt is an essential venue to share new ideas, cultures and experiences, helping millions create and build communities around their shared interests. We are excited to add it to our lineup, which already includes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostnamaste.com\/blog\/top-10-free-blogging-platforms-to-start-a-blog\/\">WordPress.com<\/a><\/strong>, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Simplenote, Longreads, and more.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana, Geneva;\">According to the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/verizon-to-sell-tumblr-to-wordpress-owner-11565640000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/strong>, Verizon sold Tumblr to Automattic at a nominal price. It is because of the tough competition and dominance by other similar platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat.
